Paver Base Depth: How Much Gravel and Sand Under Pavers?

Pavers are only as good as what is under them: compacted base and a thin, even bed of sand.

ICPI guidance

The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute’s construction guide lists:

  • Base: at least 4 in compacted for patios and walks.
  • Bedding layer: 1 in nominal.
  • Paver thickness: at least 2-3/8 in for pedestrian areas.

Driveways, clay soils and cold climates need more base. Compact the base in layers.

How deep to dig

Base + bedding sand + paver thickness. For a 4 in base, 1 in of sand and 2-3/8 in pavers, dig about 7-3/8 in below finished grade, plus any slope for drainage.

Use the paver calculator for pavers, base and sand together.
