How Much Does a Yard of Concrete Weigh?

Normal concrete weighs about 150 lb per cubic foot. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so a yard weighs roughly 4,000 lb.

The numbers

  • 1 cubic foot: about 150 lb.
  • 1 cubic yard: about 4,050 lb, roughly 2 tons.
  • A 4 in slab: about 50 lb per square foot.

Lightweight structural concrete is lighter; heavyweight concrete made with dense aggregate is heavier.

Why it matters

  • Trailers: a yard of wet concrete is more than many small utility trailers are rated to carry. Check the trailer’s rating.
  • Forms: wet concrete pushes hard on forms, which is why they need stakes and bracing.
  • Demolition: broken concrete takes up more space than solid, but still weighs a lot. Dumpster companies often limit concrete loads by weight.
