A paver patio is three layers: compacted base, a thin bed of sand, and the pavers. This works out all three.

How it works
Pavers = area / (paver length + joint) x (paver width + joint), plus extra for cuts. Base and sand are area x depth.
Example: a 12 x 16 ft patio of 4 x 8 in pavers with 1/8 in joints needs 825 pavers, 908 with 10% extra. A 4 in base is 2.37 cubic yards and 1 in of sand 0.59 cubic yards.
Depths (ICPI)
The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute calls for at least 4 in of compacted base for patios and walks, and a 1 in bedding layer of sand. Driveways and soft or wet soils need more base. In cold climates many installers go deeper still.
Edges
Pavers need an edge restraint all the way around unless they butt against something solid like a foundation.
